The use of light and dark to transfer the spirit of the woven onto cloth or paper. The Photogram’s are made in complete darkness whilst the cyanotype process uses sunlight to expose the form of the objects onto cloth. As an Australian fibre artist of Dutch descent I was intrigued by the contradictions and tensions discovered whilst researching the representation of weavers in the history of Dutch art. Recent photography such as Basket Case Erotica and Personal Jesus marks the beginning of an exploration of the paradoxical depiction of the weaver as the whore or virgin in 15th Century Dutch art. Weaving rooms were seen as places of correctional service for whores and harlots whilst on the other hand the weaver and spinner was also revered as the virgin spinner of the threads of life.
